Number 1907: Agent of the Border Patrol

When I think of the U.S. Border Patrol I think of uniformed officers stopping people at the border and checking for contraband. According to Wikipedia the agency called the United States Border Patrol was founded in 1924, far too late for the tale I am showing today. “The Wandering Killer” is a story of an undercover agent of the BP, investigating some mysterious killings. Referring again to Wikipedia, as early as 1904 there was an organization of mounted guards, working for the U.S. Immigration Service, but they never numbered more than about 75, and as the article states, they only went to work when resources permitted. You could fit this story somewhere in that time frame, but for now I’ll just consider this posting from Border Patrol #3 (1951) an exaggeration using artistic license; it is anachronistic to call John Brand a member of the Border Patrol. But then, the story is actually a tale of Indian slaves, sinister Mexicans, and the hunt for buried gold.

The handsome drawings are by Harry Anderson.

Ah, yes, San Vaca, whose name translates as “Saint Cow”. (Of course, one of the more famous neighborhoods of San Diego is named “La Jolla”, which translates as … well, nothing. The Spanish for jewel is “joya”.)

The drawings are quite nice, but of a sort especially vulnerable when the printing is careless, as here.

When I think of the Border Patrol, I think of being stopped two-to-four times in each direction as I travel to or from Tucson, to visit my parents. I also think of a department so arrogant that it effects warrantless searches and that its agents billed a young woman as if their' sexually assaulting her were a service.

The talking idol ruse -we'll never get tired of that one. It always gets results.

As a kid I would have enjoyed this story. I still have enjoyed it. Nice art work, yes. Thanks, Pappy.

Alicia, Debbie, you move in much faster circles than this old Grandpappy.

You be careful, now.

Daniel, nothing is said in the article as to cause why agents would target this young woman. Did she say something, act suspicious? What? It's hard to believe it was caused by spite, especially when getting a local hospital involved.

Not that I think she was guilty, I just don't understand the overkill on the searches without some sort of provocation.

7f7, darn it, I always get fooled by the talking idol. I mean, who would think there would be somebody doing the talking? I'm just gullible, I guess. Then again, I see the image of J.R. "Bob" Dobbs (Church of the Subgenius) in clouds, in patterns made by wood grain, or on a piece of toast. And he speaks to me.

Daniel [oeconomist.com] said...

I can only speculate as to specifics of the motives of the Border Patrol agents who violated that young woman's rights.

"Bob" Dobbs, Church of the Subgenius humor worked for me. Had a soft cover book on that until I enthusiastically loaned it -the last I saw of it. Glad you get the spiritual boost wherever you look. That lucky, a guy doesn't need talking idols. And maybe talking idols don't need us.
As always, we are thankful for your work and humor, Paps.

Pappy--the third and eight panel are returning an error warning from Google: "500. That’s an error. The server encountered an error and could not complete your request. If the problem persists, please report your problem and mention this error message and the query that caused it. That’s all we know."

William, you were correct; somehow the files for those pages were corrupted. To fix them I converted them from JPEG to BMP files, then back again to JPEG, and that seemed to work. I don't know what happened to corrupt them, but I hope it won't happen again.
