Great comic artists Joe Maneely, John Severin and Al Williamson are represented in this 1956 first issue of Atlas' Matt Slade, Gunfighter, a very fine example of the quality of Atlas Comics of the period.
Maneely died in 1958 when he fell between trains; Severin went on to a long, long career in comics and at Cracked, and Al Williamson, who died in 2010, also had a long and productive career.
I'm an avid fan of each of these masters. What a pity we've reached a point where most of the truly legendary comic artists are either gone away or nearly gone. Maneely just left way too soon. Maybe we need to show more love and honor the few who are still with us.
As a long time Williamson fan and a recent Severin convert, I want to thank you for introducing me to Maneely, Pappy.
