Arrowhead
Arrowhead is the name of a 1953 movie starring Charlton Heston and Jack Palance.
Arrowhead is the name of a 1954 comic book from Atlas which ran four issues, and apparently had nothing in common with the movie except the title and an Indian character.
A sympathetic Indian character at that. Reading this issue I see that the writer did some research into Indian life, and while there are the usual melodramatics familiar to every Western, it's actually quite good.
Joe Sinnott, one of my favorite Atlas artists, did the art chores for all four issues of
Arrowhead.
I never noticed before but I seem to see some John Severin influence in Joe's art from this!
ReplyDeleteSteve, early in his career Joe Sinnott was assistant to Tom Gill, who drew The Lone Ranger for Dell. Joe had done Westerns. It's probable he was influenced by Severin, who drew great Westerns.
ReplyDeleteNice post, and I also have to add that Joltin' Joe is one of the nicest silver age creators that you will ever meet.
ReplyDeleteHe is one of my favorites too and his terrific finishing work over so long a period on so many different lead pencillers on Fantastic Four is often overshadowed, but in my opinion, Sinnott contributed quite a lot to what made FF one of the overall better Marvel books.
