I don't believe any of those guys drawing comics in the 1940s thought that anyone would remember or be interested decades after the comics--a throwaway commodity, yet!--were printed and distributed. I'm sure many saw their comic book work as a job. More fact checking on the part of people doing interviews would be helpful. Memories are imperfect.
